About. With a forewords by both Joel Beeke and Jon MacArthur, you would be right to expect something special from this book. It is the result of decades of study and teaching. it provides a comprehensive overview of Calvinism in two sections: the "History" surveys the Reformed theologians and preachers, the development of the theology and the major controversies. Smith refers to “that divinely vital and exuberant Calvinism, the creator of the modern world, the mother of heroes, saints and martyrs in number without number, which history, judging the tree by its fruits, crowns as the greatest creed of Christendom.”[68] The impartial verdict of history is that as a character builder and as a proclaimer.

The author is not in the attack mode although this book will make a 5 point calvinist hyper-ventilate. Facts about calvinism are presented in a fair and biblical way by a writer who writes like a genleman in presenting his views.I would recommend this book to anybody who is interested in calvinism pro or con since it is always nice to get a sane civil view on any subject.5/5(5).   Curt Daniel's History and Theology of Calvinism has just arrived. RHB is the first in the U.S. to have it for sale. We have it available at a significant discount. It has been revised and expanded. At pages, this appears to be a helpful book on the development and distinctives of Calvinism.

John Calvin was born J , at Noyon, France, an ancient cathedral city about seventy miles northeast of Paris. An insightful history of Christianity's most misunderstood branch. The most fruitful portion of John T. McNeill's "The History & Character of Calvinism" is its reckoning of contemporary problems.

The book's Part IV - "Calvinism and Modern Issues" - should not be missed.4/5(7). Since the first edition of this book the output of studies in the history of Calvinism has continued in ample and unceasing flow.

It would have been impracticable to revise the text with adequate response to these; and the decision to leave it substantially unchanged has been rendered easier by the fact that the newer scholarship has not, I believe, invalidated any major statement or serious.
